Got Myself a HP Compaq 6515b Business Notebook

HP Compaq 6515 Business Notebook HP Carrying Case

After feeling tired of waiting and waiting as well doing the follow up, I finally received my HP Compaq 6515b Business Notebook on last Wednesday, the same day I went for balik kampung to Temerloh to start celebrating Eidul-Adha with my family.

The Good

  • Discounted price as I am eligible for HP Employee Purchase Program ;) Thank you very much HP!!!
  • Free HP carrying case, made by Targus. Still, I have to admit that giving away a backpack is much better.
  • I consider the specs are good and really worth it.
  • Comes with HP Fingerprint Sensor – this is really new to me and I love to play around with it.

The Bad

  • Bundled with Windows XP – It is Year 2007 (just several days before Year 2008), I don’t think I’m desperately need MS-Windows anymore. Luckily, it is not a Windows Vista, otherwise I’m going to put this under The Ugly list. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying MS-Windows sucks. I just feel that HP should give a complete freedom to the users whether they want to have a pre-installed MS-Windows or not, just like they did in US.
  • ATI Radeon X1250 & Broadcom wireless card don’t seem to work out of box on GNU/Linux distro.

The Ugly

  • The package doesn’t come with original Windows XP cd nor drivers/utilities cd – Damn, i hate this! Instead of giving away the cd’s, HP is using backup/restore method, which is pre-included in the hard disk (and of course, consuming the hard disk space).
  • The hard disk partitioning scheme sucks big time! With 120GB, there are only 2 partitions; 91% is solely for Windows while the rest is for backup purpose. Alhamdulillah, I managed to resize the NTFS partition (and then create another partitions) by using ntfstools from Ubuntu live cd, thanks to tutorial from Nishant Sharma.

[To-Do List]

  • Install Debian GNU/Linux. Hmm, Enlightenment or GNOME?
  • Install VMware server on Debian and installing several guest OS’es like RHEL, Solaris etc.
  • Discuss with Piju to start melepak at particular strategic places that provide free wireless access and having good panorama (beautiful aweks/chicks/bitches).
