AIX: How To Determine Its Detail Version

IBM AIX w00t, it’s AIX time!

In Unix/Linux/BSD, uname is normally the regular command to determine OS version. Nevertheless, I don’t really understand the uname output in AIX. Thank God, there is oslevel command. Now I can determine the detail version of AIX easily.

Case 1:
# uname -a
AIX [undisclosed] 2 4 000465E44C00
# oslevel
4.2.1.0

As I don’t really understand the output of uname, trying to read the manual. Shite, man is not working!
# man uname
man: 0703-316 Cannot open /usr/lpp/info/data/ispaths.

Case 2:
# uname -a
AIX [undisclosed] 3 4 001753684C00
# oslevel
4.3.3.0

Shite again, man is not working either!
# man uname
There is not an entry for uname.

Case 3:
PRD3_gzkqw6/home/gzkqw6 ==> uname -a
AIX [undisclosed] 2 5 0040F32A4C00
PRD3_gzkqw6/home/gzkqw6 ==> oslevel
5.2.0.0

Hence, lesson of the day is; I can us oslevel to determine the detail version of AIX. oslevel reports the latest installed maintenance and technology level of the system.

There’s a guide on uname comm on AIX:
    http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/aix/library/au-dutta_cmds.html

uname -a Displays the system name, nodename, version, machine ID.

    others:
uname -p Displays the chip type of the system. For example, PowerPC.
uname -r Displays the release number of the operating system.
uname -s Displays the system name. For example, AIX.
uname -n Displays the name of the node.
uname -M Displays the system model name. For example, IBM, 9114-275.
uname -v Displays the operating system version.
uname -m Displays the machine ID number of the hardware running the system.
uname -u Displays the system ID number.

    Piju,
-Belajar AIX? Ko belum memerlukannya kot, AIX ni bukannya OS yg digunakan untuk mainan atau desktop environment.
-Perkataan yg sensitif akan didelete, harap maklum.

    Azri,
    Thanks for the info.
