LVM on AIX: Extending a Filesystem

[Prologue]
SysAdmin received this email, looks like the request has been escalated to my boss.

L1/L2,
Could you please assist Matt ASAP! This is pertaining to UNIX acct so we need to iron out.
The SC is 14270227.
Make this high priority please.

Thanks

Issue
root filesystem (/) is currently 100% full. Quick Response Team require free disk space to perform some activities on the particular filesystem. Therefore, Unix team have to free up some space or extend the filesystem. Due to the fact that it is hard to perform housekeeping, i chose the second method.

System info

root 3 /tmp> uname -a; date; uptime
AIX xXxXx 3 4 0056BA6A4C00
Wed Sep 3 17:37:25 DFT 2008
  05:37PM up 387 days, 10:46, 3 users, load average: 1.10, 1.05, 1.05

Disk space usage (before filesystem extension)

root 3 /tmp> df -k /
Filesystem 1024-blocks Free %Used Iused %Iused Mounted on
/dev/hd4 16384 0 100% 1329 17% /

Extending the space of LV & filesystem by 16MB,

root 3 /> extendlv hd4 1
root 3 /> chfs -a size=65536 /
File System size changed to 65536

Note: size=65536, the unit is in 512 byte blocks which is equal to 16MB

Disk space usage (after filesystem extension)

root 3 /> df -k /
Filesystem 1024-blocks Free %Used Iused %Iused Mounted on
/dev/hd4 32768 15360 54% 1329 9% /

[Epilogue]
SysAdmin received this complimentary,

Thanks for the rapid response, Irwan!

Yay! Yet another satisfied customer :) Credit to my colleague, Felix Chang who is my AIX guru.

    Papit,
Hahaha! You don’t understand coz AIX is not a toy OS like Windows/Linux/BSD/Solaris that everyone can play suka-suka with. FYI, the tutorial above does not have any 1337-ness feature at all :D
